Issime/Éischeme (Aostatal)

Kurzbeschreibung

Issime (Éischeme) is situated in the Lys valley at 960 metres above sea-level. Its inhabitants number around 400. In the C. 12 and 13, Walsers from Valais migrated here and settled the area around the foot of Monte Rosa. Their dialect of Alemannic origin is called töitschu. On special occasions even today, women are dressed in their traditional bridal costume, the origins of which are to be found in the second half of the C. 19. The Parish Church of Saint James the Elder is a very old structure; inside, the majestic main altar is a work of the brothers Gilardo, dated 1698. In the surrounding hamlets and side valleys, there are various chapels, erected by the inhabitants over the centuries. The best known are the chapel of San Grato in Chröiz and the chapel of Santa Margherita, which played a rôle in the famous “Lawsuit against the Devil” of 1601. Particularly worthy of mention is the Vallone San Grato, a natural museum and also a very valuable part of Alpine cultural and environmental heritage.
Issime is divided into three parts: La Plaine or Issime Saint Jacques with the present-day centre and the Valloni di Tourison; la Montagne with the Vallone di San Grato and the Vallone di Bourines, and Tiers dessus or Issime Saint Michel, which today forms the community of Gaby. Gaby became an independent community after regional legislation in 1952 – a fact of some local import. An architectural characteristic of the area is the so-called Stoadal, a barn for cereals or hay, of which a number can be found spread across the landscape.
