Fersentaler/Bersntolar (Trentino Südtirol)

Kurzbeschreibung

The Valle dei Mòcheni (Bersntol) forms the upper part of the Fèrsina valley, 20 km from Trento (Trent). The name is derived from the local variety of German still spoken today by a large part of the population in the villages of Palù (Palai), Fierozzo (Vlarotz), Frassilongo (Garait) and Roveda (Oachlait). The settlers came from the Tyrol in the C. 13th. Since the C. 18th, in order to supplement their meagre subsistence from agriculture and forestry, many travelled as seasonal pedlars throughout Austro-Hungary, later – after the First World War – being restricted to the South Tyrol. The Bersntol community, which is recognised in the Special Statute of the Trentino-South Tyrol Autonomous Region, has founded a cultural institute to protect and promote Bersntolerisch. To better acquaint oneself with local history, culture and language, the following venues are recommended: the mine museum Gruab va Hardimbl, the traditional farmhouse Filzerhof, the watermill Mil, the water driven sawmill Sog van Rindel, and the Kulturinstitut in Palù.
